Batá Universal •
In the heart of Panama City, where the ocean’s breath meets the city’s pulse, Batá Universal weaves a sonic tapestry from the soul of the Caribbean. A four-piece ensemble—trumpet, synthesizers, and the sacred Batá drums (Iyá, Itotele, Okonkolo)—channels the ancestral rhythms of the Transatlantic trade route. Their debut album, released by River Down Records on February 27, 2022, unfolds across four tracks: ALÚMBA, a radiant call to the cosmos; MAREJADA, a tidal surge of memory; YANZA, a dance of defiance; and VERDAD ALEGRE, a joyful truth sung in coded harmonies. Voices rise, intertwining with electronic waves and the drums’ primal pulse, crafting a sound that bridges Yoruba roots with futuristic visions. Each note is a story, a real-time exploration of universal rhythms that echo from ancient shores to the stars above.
