“One might well describe her as the originator of a modern ethio-soul.”
Feven Yoseph is an Ethiopian singer, songwriter, bandleader, vocal educator, and researcher whose music bridges Ethiopia’s rich musical traditions with contemporary global sounds. Born in Dessie and shaped by the Ethiopian highlands, she studied at the Mekane Yesus School of Jazz Music in Addis Ababa, where she later taught and helped establish one of Ethiopia’s first modern vocal programs. After nearly a decade in Berlin, where she earned a degree in Vocal Performance and performed across Europe, she returned to Addis Ababa. Her voice moves between Amharic and English, blending the spiritual depth and modal richness of Ethiopian music with soul, blues, jazz, R&B, reggae, and global pop. Widely regarded as a pioneer of “Ethio Soul,” she has released the acclaimed albums Gize (2024) and Addis Meeraf (“New Chapter,” 2026). She is also the founder of OneVoice Academy, through which she coaches singers, researches Ethiopian vocal traditions, and uses music to connect cultures.
“Her album “Gize” suggests that we are dealing with a rising star of Ethio-soul.”
