Karim Ziad
Born in Algiers, Karim Ziad is a versatile musician known for his skills as a drummer, percussionist, singer, and composer. He began playing in a hard rock band, Khindjar, before moving to Paris to study biology and drums at the Conservatoire de Fontenay. Ziad has performed with Cheb Mami, Khaled, and Joe Zawinul. His band, Ifrikya, blends North African rhythms, such as Gnawa, with jazz. Since 2001, he has co-directed the Essaouira Gnaoua and World Music Festival. Ziad’s music bridges traditional Maghreb sounds with modern jazz. He also plays guitar and gimbri, reflecting his Berber roots. His innovative work continues to unite Eastern and Western musical traditions.
