Töz Trio & Hezarfen Ensemble

Töz Trio & Hezarfen Ensemble •

Töz Trio, formed by saxophonist Tamer Temel, pianist Ercüment Orkut, and drummer Cem Aksel, is known for its deep focus on the intersection of composition and improvisation. Following their critically acclaimed debut album in 2018, the trio's pursuit of collective creation led to a bold new phase: a collaboration with Hezarfen Ensemble, Turkey’s unique contemporary music ensemble.

Their joint album, Töz II, released in 2022 by A.K. Müzik, expands the trio’s signature sound—marked by subtle intensity, refined interplay, and expressive clarity—into a rich nine-piece ensemble. The project draws on Hezarfen Ensemble’s broad instrumental palette, weaving together jazz sensibilities with the textures and structures of contemporary classical music to create a sonic language that is both intricate and immediate.

Founded in 2010 by violist Ulrich Mertin and composer Michael Ellison, Hezarfen Ensemble has become a vital force in Turkey’s new music scene. With projects emphasizing intercultural exchange and interdisciplinary collaboration, Hezarfen challenges traditional boundaries between genres, practices, and geographies. The ensemble has performed across Europe’s major festivals and institutions and remains deeply committed to education and mentorship through workshops and partnerships with internationally acclaimed artists and conductors.

Töz Trio and Hezarfen Ensemble embark on a collective journey into sound, form, and creative freedom—an exploration that is aesthetically rich, deeply thought-out and meticulously crafted, yet boldly adventurous.
